A short history of Malton

Around 71 AD a Roman auxiliary fort was probably built beside the River Derwent on its northern side, with a civilian settlement opposite at Norton. The name Malton comes either from an Old English term for a settlement where councils met or from words meaning middle settlement. A wooden Norman castle was later raised on the fort site and Eustace Fitz John rebuilt it in stone. New Malton existed by 1138 and a Gilbertine monastery went up at Old Malton between 1147 and 1154. King John ordered the castle slighted in 1212 and a market is recorded in 1283. Ralph Eure built a house on the site in 1569 and it was rebuilt in 1602 before demolition in 1674. The Talbot Hotel was operating as an inn from 1740 and the Assembly Rooms opened in 1814. Of 193 listed buildings near the centre 13 are Grade II* including York House.
