A short history of Scarborough

A Roman signal station stood on the headland from about AD 370 until the early fifth century. The name comes from Skarthi's burh, a stronghold said to have been built by the Ddane Thorgils Skarthi in the 10th century, though a founding date of around 966 has no archaeological support. The Domesday survey of 1085 recorded little evidence of earlier settlement. Henry II built a stone castle and granted charters in 1155 and 1163. A royal charter of 1253 allowed Scarborough Fair, a six-week trading festival that ran until the 18th century. Under Edward II the castle was granted to Piers Gaveston and then besieged. The Scots burnt the town in 1318. A spring found in 1626 began the spa and the town changed hands seven times during the Civil War. The railway arrived in 1845. German warships bombarded the town in the First World War. The area has 28 listed buildings, with the Church of St Martin graded I.
