A short history of Kendal
Around AD 90 the Romans built a timber fort at a site later called Watercrook, lying roughly two miles to the south of the present centre. It was rebuilt in stone about 130 and occupied until about 270. The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded the area as Cherchebi under Yorkshire, a name meaning church village. The town later took the name Kirkby Kendal, with Kendal drawn from the River Kent and the Old Norse word for valley. A Norman motte and bailey castle was followed by a late 12th century castle, which became the seat of the Barony of Kendal and later the home of the Parr family. Woollen cloth, notably Kendal Green, was the main trade. A bank opened in 1788 and snuff making began in 1792. The town became Westmorland's county town in 1889. It has 176 listed buildings within a mile of the centre, including three Grade I: Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Castle Dairy and the Church of Holy Trinity.
