A short history of Catterick Garrison
In October 1907 Robert Baden-Powell was put in charge of the Northumbrian Division, part of the recently created Territorial Army. His headquarters at Richmond Castle were too small so he chose the site of the military town. Construction of a temporary camp was ordered on 12 August 1914. Known first as Richmond Camp it became Catterick Camp in 1915. The camp then held prisoners of war as the First World War ended. A permanent barracks was suggested after the partition of Ireland in 1921 and plans followed in 1923 with John Laing & Son as builder. Most facilities were finished by the mid-1930s. Prisoners were held again in the Second World War. The name Catterick Garrison dates from 1973 and RAF Catterick became Marne Barracks after closing in 1994. Nearby are 13 listed buildings including Hipswell Hall (Grade I) and the Former Sandes Soldiers' Home (Grade II*).
