A short history of Richmond

Alan Rufus, a Breton nobleman, founded Richmond in 1071 on land granted by William the Conqueror. It was first called Hindrelag. The present name comes from Old French words for a strong hill and probably refers to a Richemont in Normandy. The Domesday Book of 1086 placed the area in Yorkshire and the town in Gilling Wapentake while the castle was completed that year. The Dukes of Brittany held the earldom on and off from 1136 to 1399. Edmund Tudor received it in 1453 and it merged with the crown in 1485. Lead mining in Arkengarthdale brought wealth in the late 17th and 18th centuries, the period of the town's Georgian buildings. Richmond Barracks were completed in 1877. In 1916 the Richmond Sixteen conscientious objectors were held at the castle. Of 343 listed buildings near the centre 4 are Grade I: the castle, Holy Trinity tower, Theatre Royal and Grey Friars Tower.

Richmond Leisure and Wellbeing Hub provides swimming in the town. Richmondshire Rugby Union Football Club covers rugby, while Richmondshire Cricket Club and Richmond (Yorks) Golf Club cover cricket and golf. Westfields Tennis Club is among the places for tennis and there are several tennis courts as well as facilities for bowls, soccer and skateboarding. Open space includes Ronaldshay Park, Friary Gardens, Old Racecourse, The Batts and The Temple Grounds, with Gingerfields as a nature reserve. A number of children's playgrounds are also mapped.
