A short history of Stockton-on-Tees
The earliest Stockton was a settlement founded by the Anglo-Saxons on raised ground near the northern bank of the River Tees. Its name is thought to mean a farm or homestead, though the first element is disputed. A manor is recorded here by 1138 and Bishop Pudsey of Durham bought it in 1189. The bishop later turned the village into a borough, recorded as such by 1283. Bishop Bek granted a market charter in 1310 and the town became a small port trading wool and wine. Stockton Castle was held by the Scots from 1644 to 1646, then destroyed on Cromwell's order. The Town House dates from 1735 and a stone bridge from 1771. The Stockton and Darlington Railway opened in 1825 and John Walker invented the friction match in 1827. Holy Trinity Church was consecrated in 1835. The area has 190 listed buildings, including two Grade I: the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin and Stockton Parish Church.
