A short history of Billingham

Billingham began as an Anglo-Saxon village settled by Angles and its name may mean either the home of Billa's people or the home of the people of a bill-shaped hill. It lay within a Northumbrian territory that later passed to late Viking rule and was then divided, with Billingham falling in Hartness and then in a small shire called Billinghamshire. St Cuthbert's Parish Church has parts of its nave from the late 7th or early 8th century and a tower from around AD 1000. The town was chosen in 1917 for a chemical works making ammonia for the war, though it was not finished until 1920. Brunner Mond took it over to make fertilisers and in 1926 the firm merged into Imperial Chemical Industries. Wartime demand for explosives brought major expansion and a new town centre followed the Second World War. Of 12 listed buildings, the Church of St Cuthbert is Grade I, while a phosphate rock silo at the ICI works and St Cuthbert's Vicarage are Grade II*.
