A short history of Cockermouth

The town takes its name from its position at the mouth of the River Cocker, a river name drawn from a Brythonic Celtic word meaning crooked. The Romans built a fort at nearby Papcastle to guard a river crossing on a route towards Hadrian's Wall. The Normans later occupied that fort and built Cockermouth Castle nearer the crossing and Robert the Bruce left little of it standing. A market existed before 1221 when Henry III granted the first of two charters, the second following in 1227. Mary, Queen of Scots, came to the town in 1568 after her defeat at Langside. Cockermouth was a parliamentary borough from 1641 to 1918. The medieval layout was filled in during the 18th and 19th centuries. Six electric lamps lit the town in 1881. Seven of the 97 listed buildings near the centre are Grade I, among them the castle and Wordsworth House. Severe floods struck in 2009 and again in 2015.
