A short history of Spennymoor
The area was once open moorland grown over with thorn and whin bushes. William Cumyn fortified the Norman church at Merrington in 1143 and Thomas de Acle held Whitworth in 1183. The name was recorded as Spendingmor in 1336 and probably means a moor that was fenced or enclosed. Whitworth became Neville property in 1420. In 1677 local landowners divided 243 acres of the moor between them. Modern Spennymoor began when the Wittered pit was sunk in 1839 and Merrington Colliery sent up its first coal in 1841. Merrington church was almost wholly rebuilt in 1850 and ironworks opened at Tudhoe in 1853. The colliery closed in 1882.
