Coal lay just below the ground and more than twenty mines soon operated around the town. By the end of the nineteenth century Crook had grown quickly in both population and economy. In the twentieth century the mines and other industries closed and the local population fell, with unemployment at one point above 34%. Five listed buildings stand within half a mile of the centre.
