A short history of Seaham

The nave of the parish church of St Mary the Virgin is thought by some experts to be as old as the 7th century and Dalden Tower is a medieval fortified manor house. Seaham remained a small farming village until the early 19th century. Anne Isabella Milbanke married Lord Byron at Seaham Hall on 2 January 1815. In 1821 the Milbankes disposed of their estate to the 3rd Marquess of Londonderry, who in 1823 asked John Dobson to plan a town around a harbour that was built in 1828. Funds ran short, so the town grew piecemeal and was first called Seaham Harbour. The first coal mine began in 1845 and the Londonderry Bottleworks ran from 1853 to 1921. An explosion at Seaham Colliery in 1880 killed over 160 people. The enlarged dock opened in 1905 and Vane Tempest Colliery began production in 1928. The lifeboat George Elmy was lost in 1962 and all three pits had closed by 1992. Seaham has 17 listed buildings, including St Mary's Church at Grade I.
