A short history of Houghton-le-Spring
The name Houghton comes from Old English words meaning a hill and a settlement. The Boldon Book of 1183 records it as Hoctona, listing cottagers, a smith, a carpenter and a punder who held land in return for their services. A document of 1220 gives the name as Houghton Sprynges. By 1311 Albreda, widow of Sir Henry Spring, held the village, though the origin of "le Spring" is disputed. Another suggestion is a Le Spring family. In 1557 Bernard Gilpin became rector of one of the biggest parishes in the country and his tomb lies in the church of St Michael and All Angels, which dates to Norman times. A parish register of 1598 supports the view that the name refers to medicinal springs. Coal mining started with a shaft sunk from 1823 and ended in 1981. Of 21 listed buildings near the centre, the church is Grade I.
