A short history of Consett
The name Consett comes from the Old English Cunecesheafod, first recorded in the 13th century. Heafod means headland, while the meaning of the first part is less clear. In the 17th century German cutlers and sword-makers from Solingen are said to have settled at Shotley Bridge, starting steel making in the Derwent Valley. Through the 17th and 18th centuries the valley was the centre of British steel making, helped by local coal and Swedish iron ore brought through Newcastle upon Tyne. The Bessemer process of the 19th century ended that advantage. In 1841 Consett was a village of only 145 people, but coking coal, blackband iron ore and limestone lay nearby, all needed for blast furnaces. Within the central area there are 11 listed buildings, all Grade II. They include the War Memorial at the Civic Centre.
