A short history of Carlisle

Carlisle began as the Roman settlement of Luguvalium, where a timber fort dated to the winter of AD 73 stood on the site of the present castle. It was rebuilt in AD 83 and the largest fort on Hadrian's Wall was finished in stone at Stanwix around AD 130. Coins suggest Romans remained until the reign of Valentinian II. In 685 St Cuthbert was shown the city walls and a Roman fountain. The Scots held Carlisle by the Norman Conquest of 1066 and the Domesday survey of 1086 contains no entry for it. William Rufus brought it into England in 1092 and work on the castle began in 1093, with a stone rebuild in 1112. The cathedral was established in 1133. A county was created in 1157 as Carliol and renamed Cumberland in 1177. Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned in the castle in 1568. Within 1.6 miles of the centre there are 343 listed buildings including 24 at Grade I such as Eden Bridge.
