A short history of Sunderland

Sunderland grew from three Anglo-Saxon settlements: Monkwearmouth on the river's north side with Sunderland and Bishopwearmouth on the south. Around 674 King Ecgfrith granted land to Benedict Biscop, who founded a stone monastery at Monkwearmouth that became a major centre of learning. Bede was born there in 673 and completed his Ecclesiastical History of the English People in 731. Viking raids in the late eighth century were followed by the monastery's abandonment by the mid ninth century. In 930 Athelstan gave the southern lands to the Bishop of Durham and they became Bishopwearmouth. By 1100 the parish included a fishing village called 'Soender-land', which received a charter in 1179 from Bishop Hugh Pudsey. Shipbuilding began at Wearmouth in 1346 and salt pans were laid by 1589. Bishop Thomas Morton granted a market and fair charter in 1634. Of 235 listed buildings nearby, five are Grade I, including the Church of St Peter, Holy Trinity, Hylton Castle and Hylton Chapel.
