A short history of Washington

The name appears around 1096 as Wasindone and in 1183 as Wassyngtona. Its origin is disputed, though local historians favour Hwæsingatūn, meaning a landholding of the family of Hwæsa. William de Hertburn moved to the area in 1183, took the name of his new lands and became William de Wessyngton. He may have built the Old Hall. His family, forebears of George Washington, moved to Sulgrave Manor in Northamptonshire by 1539, when the spelling Washington was in use. The present Old Hall is an early 17th-century sandstone manor house. After Margaret Bell died in 1871, Sir Isaac Lowthian Bell set up an orphanage at Washington New Hall. Washington became a new town in 1964 and part of Tyne and Wear in 1974. Of the 16 listed buildings near the centre, Washington Old Hall and its lodge are Grade I.
