A short history of Ryton
Ryton was historically part of County Durham. Some think coal was mined here in Roman times but extensive mining followed Henry III's permission in 1239 to dig outside the walls. William Wallace burned the village in 1297 and David II of Scotland attacked in 1346, plundering the church. Coal was shipped from Winlaton to London by 1367 and the Battle of Newburn Ford was fought nearby in 1640. By 1704 the Ryton Company's lead-smelting business had joined the London Lead Company. The Grove was believed built for the Surtees family in 1742. The Stargate Pit opened in 1800 and an explosion on 30 May 1826 killed 20 men and 18 boys. It reopened in 1840 and closed in 1961. The Grove was remodelled in 1919 and part of its estate became a nature reserve in 1964. Four Grade II listed buildings include the Church of St Hilda.
