A short history of Newcastle upon Tyne
Newcastle began as Pons Aelius, a Roman fort and bridge over the River Tyne founded in the 2nd century AD under the emperor Hadrian. After the Romans left in 410 the settlement belonged to the kingdom of Northumbria and was called Munucceaster. Robert Curthose built a wooden castle in 1080 and the town came to be called New Castle. A stone castle replaced it in 1087 and Odo of Bayeux all but destroyed the settlement after the rebellion of 1088. The castle was rebuilt in 1172 and much of the keep dates from then. Henry IV made Newcastle a county in its own right in 1400. From 1530 coal shipments from Tyneside were confined to the Quayside. Among 635 listed buildings the Grade I include High Level Bridge and Grainger Market.
