In 1774 a Newcomen atmospheric engine of 40 horsepower, built to a John Smeaton design as an experimentally determined model, was put in for drainage. By the 1860s Long Benton or Benton Colliery stood where Benton Road crossed the Coxlodge Waggonway. Newcastle City Council built a large municipal housing estate in the 1930s and extended it in the 1950s.
